Long before you’re aware of it, your nervous system is running constant threat assessments. Every reach, bend or shift is checked against what your body believes it can do without risking harm.
This sense of safety is purely mechanical. Your nervous system is always evaluating load, position and stability to decide how much movement to permit and how much to restrict. When something feels uncertain, the nervous system steps in to protect you.

Before any movement begins, your nervous system performs a rapid threat assessment. It gathers information from your joints, muscles and spine to build a moment‑by‑moment picture of what is safe to do.
If that information suggests instability or unpredictability, the nervous system interprets it as a potential threat. So, to prevent what it perceives as risk, it restricts your movement options. Your body becomes cautious, limiting movement range, and slowing transitions to avoid surprises and keep you safe.
Once the nervous system senses uncertainty, it shifts immediately into a protective mode and prioritises safety over ease, control over fluidity.
Often it will use a response like co‑contraction. This is where opposing muscle groups tighten at the same time to create stiffness around a joint or spinal segment.
The resulting bracing acts like a temporary splint, giving the body a sense of stability when it doesn’t fully trust the underlying structures.
Trying to push through this protective bracing rarely works. If your nervous system has decided a movement isn’t safe, forcing it only increases the protective response.
When that protective state continues, the ongoing lack of clear mechanical information about load, position, or stability pushes your nervous system to reduce motor output. You may feel weak, hesitant, or uncoordinated because your nervous system is holding your muscles in check. It’s limiting your options to prevent what it perceives as a threat.
This is why effort alone cannot override a protective system. The nervous system will always choose protection first.

This shift doesn’t come from forcing the body to move differently. It comes from restoring enough safety for the nervous system to allow movement it previously restricted.
